Mattress Selection Guide for Homes with newborn babies and/or kids

We all know the adverse effects of having an unsound sleep—a tired body, foggy brain and an unproductive day altogether! Now imagine your newborn baby or kid having to deal with all these! Even worse, they would never get to know who the culprit is!

But you know certainly…it’s your mattress!

If you are contemplating to buy best mattress online for your newborn or for your kid, we know it must be an overwhelming experience, thanks to multiple brands and numerous specifications that are easily available today.

But we decided to make it further easier for you…

Here are a few must-have features in a mattress when you are buying it for your kid or your new born delight.

1. It should be waterproof

Since we are prioritizing the needs of babies and kids here, we cannot ignore the waterproof feature in a mattress. When it is the babies who are using the mattress, you can expect all the Ps—pee, poop, or even puke (at times all together!) So the wisest thing to do is to invest in a waterproof mattress.

2. It should be washable

Yes, you heard us right! We have washable mattresses available in the market and without a doubt, the inspiration behind them are our very own kids. Having a washable memory foam mattress means getting rid of all the foreign elements such as dust mites, allergens or even stubborn stains, all in one wash.

3. It should have eco-friendly materials

When all we want for our kids is the best then how we can invest in a mattress that uses chemicals or heavy metals such as polyurethane, phthalates or VOCs. Ensure that the materials used in your kid’s mattress are eco-friendly. And you can do it by simply asking for the CertiPUR-US certification.

4. It should have the right firmness

While the firmness of the mattress will largely depend on the age of the kids, it definitely should neither be too soft nor too firm. A mattress with a medium level of firmness is suggested to be used by kids. Another great way to adjust the firmness of a mattress is by adding a mattress topper to your kids’ mattress.

5. It should not have too much of bounce

While the mattresses that come with a bounce might look like a lot of fun and comfort, they should be strictly avoided for kids for two reasons. One, such mattresses are very soft in nature and two; they are definitely a threat to the safety of young kids who are used to jumping and playing on the bed.

6. It should be a dense mattress

The density of a mattress is another important feature to look for when buying a mattress for your kids. The denser the mattress, the better it is for your kids’ health. A dense mattress will neither sag too quickly nor break down easily from different places. There is a small test that you can do to check the density of the mattress. Try to press the mattress with both your hands on either side. If you are able to easily press the king size memory foam mattress, it is not dense enough and will not be durable as well.
